As we commemorate the 127th Philippine Independence Day, I find myself reflecting not only on our nation’s history but also on what it means to be Filipino while living far from home. Here in Austria, thousands of kilometers from the Philippines, this celebration takes on a deeper, more personal meaning. It’s not just about remembering June 12, 1898—it’s about carrying our identity proudly in a foreign land.

Living in Austria has opened my eyes to the richness of our heritage. We come from a country that fought for freedom with unwavering courage. Our heroes—Rizal, Bonifacio, Aguinaldo—dreamed of a nation where Filipinos could determine their future. Today, while we enjoy the privileges of freedom, many of us abroad are also fighting quieter battles: for recognition, for equal opportunity, and to preserve our culture in a different world.

Being a Filipino in Austria means bridging two worlds. We adapt to a new language, culture, and climate, yet our hearts remain deeply tied to the Philippines. Whether it’s through celebrating fiestas, cooking adobo, or teaching our children Tagalog, we continue the legacy of our ancestors by ensuring that our identity lives on.

This Independence Day, let us remember that freedom is not just a historical event—it is a living value. It means having the right to dream, to work, and to love wherever we are. Let’s honor our history by standing proud, by helping one another, and by showing the world the strength, resilience, and warmth of the Filipino spirit.

Mabuhay ang Pilipinas. Mabuhay tayong lahat—dito man sa Austria o saan mang panig ng mundo.
